Right of way is the first question
Whether the driver was required to yield, and whether you were where you were entitled to be. Being outside a crossing does not automatically end a claim, because drivers still owe a duty to keep a proper lookout.
Conditions are evidence
Signal timing, lighting, obstructions, and weather all matter, and all are easiest to document close to the date.
Injuries tend to be serious
A person on foot has no protection at all, so even a low speed impact can cause fractures or a head injury. Treatment often runs long, and the record has to follow it.
If the driver left
Uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy may apply even though you were walking. It is worth checking before assuming there is nothing.
