How to check the status of an immigration case

What the online tools tell you, and what they do not.

Start with the receipt number

Every filing generates a receipt notice with a case number. The official case status tool on the USCIS website reports the current step using that number. Create an online account to see filings together and to receive updates.

Understand what the status text means

Statuses are broad categories, not a live view. Case received, request for evidence, interview scheduled, case approved. A case can sit at one status for a long time while work is happening, and a change does not always signal what people assume.

Processing time tools, used correctly

USCIS publishes current processing times by form and by office. Those are the numbers to rely on, because they change. Any timeframe you read in an article, including this one, may already be out of date.

When silence is worth acting on

Where a case is outside the posted processing time, there are formal ways to inquire, and further options where a case is genuinely stuck. Address changes must also be reported, and a missed notice because of an old address causes real damage.
